#9 Mac’s Hop Rocker

Mac's Hop RockerName: Hop Rocker
Brewer: Mac’s (Wellington, New Zealand)
Style: Pilsener
ABV: 5.5%
Source: Maggie and Jeff’s house

I didn’t actually get my own Hop Rocker photo because I didn’t have my phone with me, so apologies to blogger Mal who I stole this from. Please don’t sue me – I spent all my money on expensive beer.

So, today’s beer is my second favorite one by Mac’s. I like Hop Rocker because it’s tasty, relatively inexpensive, and available in lots of pubs that don’t serve any other good beers.

As you can see from Mal’s lovely photo (I wish I had a glass like that, at home I’m limited to a wine glass, a water glass or a jar), Hop Rocker pours a clear, bright gold with a strong white head. It tastes quite malty and bready, with a light fruitiness and a subtle hoppy kick which rounds everything out quite nicely. It’s dry, refreshing and really easy to drink.

Though the name “Hop Rocker” suggests it’s going to have a real zing, I think beers like Epic Armageddon have made me almost numb to said zing. Tomorrow I’m going to try their “Hop Zombie”, after which I may never taste again.

  1. What the …..

Mac’s Hop Rocker in the hideous green livery they are pimping nowadays is a long way from their roots… the current “strain” is less than ideal for those that have seen HR go from hero to zero. Too bad they can’t spend as much on their beers as they can their advertising.

    • Yes, it does seem a bit blander than it used to be, though I’m probably a bit young to have tried it in it’s “Hero” phase. Nevertheless I think it’s a decent option when craft beers aren’t available.

  2. Hey thats my kitchen!
    Help yourself to any photos.
    Cheers
    Malcolm

    • Thanks Malcom. Nice blog by the way!
